John started out dj'ing from the age of 14 after being inspired by a local Dj Stuart Cochrane (Scooby) who was a face around town and played regularly at his local under 18's nightclub rainbow rocks.
Following this dj and becoming friends from a young age he started to buy vinyl and build up a rather rare and classic collection of dance music which again led onto his fascination with the 90’s rave culture that was sweeping the nation.
To help fund his vinyl addiction John started to organise coaches to warehouse party’s all over Scotland such as Rezerection, Fantazia,Streetrave, Awesome 101, week in week out to watch his favourite DJs from all around the world perform.
His first opportunity to put on his very own night was when he was 16 at a local community centre where he regularly hung out with friends … After being asked from local youth worker he managed with a little help to do 3 very successful nights with young up & coming dj’s from around Stirling, he was hooked the buzz it game him putting smiles on people’s faces by playing music and running the night was just what the doctor ordered .. his sights were set higher and his first ever club he was given the opportunity to play was Fubar, Stirling.
The Fubar club in the early 90's was rated 1 of the best in the country for their all night events and won numerous awards from magazines and radio shows . So for this local DJ to be given the chance to play this venue was a huge thing!! Not only did he get the chance to play in his home town but play beside some of the biggest DJ talent around at that time from superstars like Carl Cox to Pete Tong, Paul trouble Anderson to David Morale…it was a huge accomplishment for him this led to a 7 year residency with the club.
After securing a residency at the club john went on to appear as a Guest Dj all over Scotland playing in venue's such as The Arches, The Ice Factory ,Archaos, The Tunnel to name but a few. Playing for some of the hottest club brands such as Ministry of Sound, Cream, M8 , Clubscene the list goes on and on. As well as his club appearances John featured on radio shows such as Clyde 1 FM , Beat 106 and Joy FM.
After the years passed John decided it was time for him to start up his own club night that he could own and promote himself alongside friends Alex & Martin, so in February 2003 John launched his PhreakUnique brand @ The Beat, Stirling.
He was responsible for bringing some of the hottest dj talent and live acts to the club which led onto bigger and better opportunities hosting boat party’s & club nights in Glasgow Edinburgh, Dundee & Aberdeen.
He decided to return to his hometown in 2010 to play resident back where it all began the The Fubar and was involved in the booking of Guests and Planning of various themed nights within the club such as electrodiscko, ultraphunk & house project where he was resident. Ibiza was the next stop..after clubbing on the island for over 20 years he done a good 8 year of that over the last 10 Djing at Mambo, Cafe Del Mar, Savannah, Stereo, Lush, Plastik, Coastline, Kanya,Eden, Es Paradis, Ocean Beach and the infamous Privelidge...where he supported his hero Carl Cox.
In 2015 “Subliminal” was born.. an idea that came from John spinning at a underground club in Glasgow called Fabriq..he wanted to recreate that intimate atmosphere feel of a club packed with like minded people dancing to the finest of house music.. being an massive fan of the late Erick Morrillo again who influenced John heavily throughout his career there was only 1 name for the night.
Since the birth of Subliminal the club brand has went on to hail guest’s such as Illyus & Barrientos, The Mambo Brothers, Lovely Laura & Ben Santiago ,Seb Fontaine , Brandon Block & Alex P, Allistair Whitehead, Graeme Park, Jon Pleased Wimmin… aswell hosting party in various venues around town the club night has recently returned to the Fubar where they will continue there success with some amazing guests planned in for the year ahead 2022.
John's musical style ranges from Deep/Soulful/Funky house through to the more Tech & Proggressive genres.. DJs like Farley "jack" master Funk, Erick Morillo, Masters at Work, Danny Rampling, Pete Tong, Carl Cox, Frankie Knuckles, David Morales, Larry Levan, Danny Krivit, Joey Negro, Stuart "scooby" Cochrane shaped the DJ that John Devlin is today and if it wasn't for them showing their music ability and style, and unique taste they all have who knows where it would have led. However this DJ is still out there spinning and doing what he loves best and continues to support Subliminal for as long as it may last.
